Research

Our research focuses on renal osteodystrophy (the abnormalities of bone during chronic kidney disease), and the bone's secretion and renal signaling induced by the phosphate regulator hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor 23.
We aim to decipher the reasons for the heterogeneity in bone disorder subtypes during chronic kidney disease and improve the corresponding therapeutic options, and to better understand the phosphate-induced cellular sensing, signaling and transport processes in bone cells.

We use a combination of clinical cohorts, precision-cut kidney slices, ex vivo bone assays, transgenic animal models, population genetics and molecular and cell biological methods. Altogether, our laboratory aims to establish novel diagnostic or therapeutic targets to alleviate some of the most devastating complicances of chronic kidney disease.

Our current research funding has been granted by Swiss National Science Foundation, Burgergemeinde Bern Stiftung, Karolinska Institutet Research Foundation, and NovoNordisk Nordic Foundation.
